The modelling of volume through strong, unbroken transitions from light to dark, with a small lit passage carrying the subject out of an enveloping ground. It is a compositional device as much as a lighting one: the shadow is not empty background but a mass with weight and edge.
In practice
In criticism it names the whole light-dark drama. On set it usually means one hard key and the discipline to let everything else go.
Not to be confused with
Origin
Italian chiaro (light, clear) and oscuro (dark, obscure). In use for drawing on toned paper by the sixteenth century, well before it described painting or film.
