Epoxy

Also called two-part epoxy, structural adhesive, epoxide

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

A resin and a hardener that co-react rather than dry, so it cures inside a gap and will fill one. Strong on nearly everything, slow, and unforgiving of mix ratio — off-ratio epoxy stays soft forever and cannot be rescued, only removed. Nothing else bonds dissimilar materials as reliably.

Section through a half-lap, the two members hatched in opposite directions where they overlap. The stepped joint line between them is drawn deliberately thick and left hollow: a measurable gap of uniform thickness, spanned by the adhesive rather than closed by contact. The overlap is called out as the whole strength of the joint.

In practice

"Epoxy" names an adhesive, a casting resin, a paint and a laminating matrix. Same chemistry, wildly different pot lives and properties. Ask which one is in the tin.
