Brazing

Also called silver soldering, hard soldering, silver brazing

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

Joining with a filler that melts above roughly 450 °C while the parent metal stays solid throughout. The filler wets both surfaces and capillary action draws it into the gap, so strength depends on clearance — a few thousandths, no more. It joins dissimilar metals that cannot be welded to one another.

Section through a brazed half-lap between two metals, hatched in opposite directions. Both parent sections run intact right up to the joint; the stepped gap between them is filled solid with a third metal in accent, drawn as a thin uniform layer with a triangular fillet where it wets out at each open edge.

In practice

"Silver soldering" is brazing by temperature, and every jeweller calls it soldering regardless. The 450 °C line is the only thing separating the two words.
