Tri

Also called triangle, tri-face, triangular face

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

A three-vertex face. Always planar, never ambiguous, and the only primitive a GPU actually rasterizes — every other face type is triangulated before it is drawn. In a subdivision cage a triangle produces a three-valence pole and a small curvature dimple under Catmull–Clark, which is the real reason modelers avoid them.

A quad grid with one quad split into two triangles along a heavy diagonal, the three-valence face point Catmull–Clark would put at the triangle's centre circled with its three spokes, and the edge loop that ran along that row drawn dashed where it stops at the split.

In practice

'Tris' is the unit of a game budget. Triangulating is a destructive bake; tris in the exported mesh are unavoidable and say nothing about tris in the cage, which are the ones that matter.
