Laser cutting

Also called laser, CO2 laser, lasering

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

Burning through sheet with a focused beam. The cut is a taper, not a slot — the top edge is wider than the bottom — and every edge is heat-affected: acrylic flame-polishes, wood chars, MDF stinks and darkens a millimetre in. Kerf runs a few tenths of a millimetre and must be offset for any fit.

Cross-section through a laser-cut sheet edge, exaggerated. The cut wall slopes inward from top to bottom; the kerf is dimensioned at both faces and a hatched band along the wall marks the heat-affected zone.

In practice

A desktop CO2 tube and a metal fibre laser take the same file and are not the same machine. Ask the wattage before promising steel.
