Master

Also called master model, original, the good one

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

The finished original a mould is taken from when the goal is copies of that exact object — usually the appearance model itself, surfaced and painted before moulding. Where a pattern is built in order to be moulded, a master is built to be looked at, and gets moulded because it came out well.

A two-column text comparison headed "Why the object exists". Left, in accent: Pattern — built in order to be moulded, carrying draft and shrinkage allowance the casting will not have; tooling, and crude wherever it doesn't touch the mould. Right: Master — built to be looked at, then moulded because it came out well, carrying the finished surface exactly. The one you'd be sorry to lose.

In practice

Most shops use the two words interchangeably. The distinction that survives is intent: a pattern is tooling; a master is the one you would be sorry to lose.
