Stack-up

The accumulation of individual tolerances along a chain of features, resolving whether an assembly still fits at its extremes. Worst-case analysis sums the full bands and is conservative; statistical methods sum in quadrature and accept a defect rate. Choosing between them is a business decision in engineering clothes.

Three 10 mm features laid end to end, each toleranced ±0.10. Beneath them the accumulation is read off at every joint on a magnified scale: ±0.10 after one link, ±0.20 after two, ±0.30 after three — the worst-case sum, putting the far end between 29.70 and 30.30. A fourth band, drawn open, shows the same chain summed in quadrature at ±0.17: narrower, and narrower only because it accepts a defect rate for saying that every link landing at the same extreme won't happen.

In practice

The thing nobody does until the first article won't go together. Every dimension left to the title-block general tolerance is still in the chain.
