Turning

Also called lathe work, lathing, spinning up

This entry has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

Cutting with a stationary tool against rotating work, producing forms symmetrical about a single axis. The lathe fixes the axis; the tool traces the profile. Anything round — a knob, a spindle, a wheel — comes out faster and truer turned than milled, and anything not round cannot be turned at all.

A cylindrical blank spinning about a horizontal axis with a single-point tool advancing along it from the right, tracing a stepped profile. The axis of revolution is drawn as a centreline.
