Climb cut

Also called climb milling, down milling, down cut

Feeding so the cutter's rotation runs in the same direction as the feed, taking a thick chip first and thinning it to nothing at exit. Leaves a better finish and far less tear-out, but the cutter tries to pull the work into itself — fine on a rigid CNC, genuinely dangerous on a hand router.

Top view of a cutter rotating clockwise and feeding right, so the flute enters the material at full chip thickness and exits at zero. The chip is drawn as a comma tapering to a point; a force arrow pulls the work toward the cutter.
