Low key

A tonal strategy in which most of the frame sits in the lower register and a small, controlled area carries the light. The ratio is high, fill is minimal or absent, and form is described by the few edges that catch the key rather than by overall illumination.
In practice
About where the tones live, not how dark the print is. A low-key image still needs a specular somewhere near white or it has no snap at all.
Not to be confused with
- High keyA tonal strategy placing most of a scene's values in the upper register with a low key-to-fill ratio, so shadows stay open and transitions gentle. The range is compressed toward the light end deliberately: it is a decision about where the histogram sits, not a failure of exposure.
- ChiaroscuroThe modelling of volume through strong, unbroken transitions from light to dark, with a small lit passage carrying the subject out of an enveloping ground. It is a compositional device as much as a lighting one: the shadow is not empty background but a mass with weight and edge.
