Design Nomenclature / Type

Spine

The main curved stroke of S and s, running from the upper terminal to the lower one. Its angle is the clearest single reading of a face's stress, and getting it to look upright while being drawn as a double curve is a set piece of type design — a mathematically symmetrical S looks bottom-light.

A capital S with a leader to the S-curve forming its body and two more to the finished ends of the stroke at top right and bottom left.
