Anisotropy

Roughness that differs along two tangent directions, stretching the highlight perpendicular to the surface's structure. Produced by anything unidirectional: brushed metal, hair, vinyl, satin weave. It needs a tangent frame to orient against, so it inherits every flaw in the UV layout and shears wherever the layout does.

One material measured twice, not two materials: a narrow lobe and a wide one overlaid on a single polar plot at forty-five degrees incidence, both anchored on the same mirror direction, because the two tangent directions they stand for are perpendicular and one plane cannot draw them apart. The legend gives the half-widths that fall out — about four degrees along the grooves against thirty across. Beside it, the highlight those two make: a pale ellipse over a ruled lay, stretched perpendicular to the grooves rather than along them.
