Why sans serif typefaces are recommended for screen display, particularly for those with low vision.

The screen is a difficult environment for reading, especially for those with low-vision. Use sans serif typefaces.

Sans serif fonts generally perform better than serifs for screen display, particularly at smaller sizes.

Serif fonts are to be used with great care. Many serif fonts do not display well on the screen, especially when used for continuous text in sizes smaller than 19 pixels. Fine serifs, thin strokes, and nuances do not render well. The serifs create visual noise around the letter forms, which detracts from legibility.

Avoid ornamental and highly stylized typefaces (Arditi, 1991).
