Base Size Standards

The recommended minimum font size is 14 points, or approximately 19 pixels in Verdana, for accessible reading. Traditional print sizes of 9-10 point are unsuitable for digital displays. This particularly benefits users with low-vision and older adults.

X-Height Method

The National Institute of the Blind recommends maintaining an x-height between 2mm and 4mm (approximately 12-14 points or 19 pixels). The actual x-height measurement in chosen typefaces matters more than point size alone.

Scaling Considerations

Type size affects layout stability across display scaling. Undersized bases become illegible when scaled down; oversized bases create poor word breaks when scaled up.

Accessibility Guidance

  • Small captions are acceptable at a minimum of 75% of 19-pixel Verdana
  • Well-spaced capitals work better than lowercase for tiny sizes
  • Avoid capitals for continuous reading passages
  • Provide ample margin space around condensed typography

Typeface Variation

The same point size produces perceptually different results across typefaces. Verdana exhibits the highest x-height among common fonts, improving readability at smaller scales.
