Tolerance

Also called limits, bilateral tolerance, unilateral tolerance, limits and fits

The total permissible variation on a dimension — the distance between its upper and lower limits. Bilateral tolerance splits the band either side of the stated size (10 ±0.1); unilateral permits deviation one way only (10 +0.2 / −0). The band is what gets manufactured to; the stated size is a convenience.

A 10 mm nominal with a shaded band running from 10.0 up to 10.2 and nothing below it — a unilateral tolerance, the deviation above measured as +0.2 and the side below marked “0 — no deviation below”. The total is dimensioned at 0.2. Because deviation is permitted one way only, the stated size is itself a limit: the same 0.2 width a bilateral ±0.1 would give, placed entirely on one side.

In practice

Quoted with confidence by people who have never checked a stack-up. An uncosted tolerance is a wish, and halving one is the fastest way to double a part's price.
